Evaluation Questions
Some CME offices have taken to asking the speaker for questions to evaluate uptake of information for his or her lectures. Unfortunately, I do not participate in these exercises. The reasons why are:
- I am not a trained test question writer. When I have taken the tests written by amateurs at question writing, the questions are at best frustrating and at worst lend false knowledge. As such, I cannot perpetrate more bad tests.
- This method doesn’t actually evaluate learners uptake of new knowledge
In lieu of questions, I highly recommend surveying the audience on the usefulness, impact, and knowledge transmission of the lecture. I would be very appreciative if you would forward me the results of these surveys.
Objectives
The objectives for all of my talks are:
The learner will be able to after this lecture:
- Apply new knowledge and strategies to optimize the care of the critically ill patient as provided by the multi-professional team
- Review and integrate guidelines to measure performance and identify areas for further study and improvement
- Use the best current evidence combined with tacit knowledge to best treat his or her patients
- Identify and avoid the most common errors when treating patients with this condition
- Combine best practice and compassion to be able to communicate goals of care with patients and families
Citations
Some CME offices go further and want published literature to offer CME for my lectures. Here are some citations that may be useful in this regard:

Can I have a copy of your powerpoint/slides
No. While there is a perception that somehow screening my slides will ensure the absence of any conflicts of interest, this is of course rubbish. My slides contain all pictures or 1-2 words per slide. Please see my attestation for COI. I have no conflicts of interest, I am taking money from no companies or entities, and my slides will be finished just prior to the presentation–unfortunately no slideset will be provided.
